CSL Behring UK Ltd launches Riastap®, the first and only licensed fibrinogen concentrate in the UK

CSL Behring, one of the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies specialising in the manufacture of plasma products, today announced the launch of Riastap®, the first and only licensed fibrinogen concentrate in the UK.
Riastap is licensed for the treatment of bleeding in patients with congenital hypo-, or afibrinogenaemia with bleeding tendency.
Fibrinogen deficiency is characterised by either absence of fibrinogen, very low levels of fibrinogen or dysfunctional fibrinogen,
and may result in either haemorrhagic or thrombotic events. The estimated incidence is 1–2 per million of the general population and it affects male and female equally.
Conditions of congenital fibrinogen deficiency are classified into two types:
- Type I deficiencies, or quantitative abnormalities (afibrinogenaemia or hypofibrinogenaemia)
- Type II deficiencies, or qualitative abnormalities (dysfibrinogenaemia).
